Under support of President and Government of Ukraine
Introduction
The Executive Committee of the Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA) invites you to attend the Third International Conference focused on improvement of agricultural education and science as a key pathway to strengthen food security and sustainable development.
The Third International Conference of the Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA) will be held on September 22-24, 2003 in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Kyiv,
a scenic city of close to 3 million people situated on the Dnipro River, is the bustling capital of Ukraine. Ancient Kievan Rus, which reached its greatest period of ascendancy during the 11th and 12th centuries, was a center of trade routes between the Baltic and the Mediterranean. The arts and architecture of Kyiv are world treasures. The Cathedral of St.Sophia, where the princes of Kyiv were crowned in the years of Kyiv's grandeur, has outstanding mosaics and frescoes dating back to the 11th century. The ancient monastery of the caves, Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, has two 11th-century cathedrals, world-famous catacombs, bell tower, and museum collections.
Historians trace the Ukrainian nation's roots to the Trypillya culture, which absorbed the best attainments and traditions of the local agricultural and pastoral tribes and reached an extremely high level in the 4th millennium B.C. During subsequent centuries ethic and cultural communities continued to evolve in what is currently the territory of Ukraine. Eventually, they were all conquered by Scythian tribes emerging in the Black Sea steppes in the 7th century B.C., leaving behind many gold and silver masterpieces of the jeweller art, among which is the world-known Pectoral, presented at Kyiv museums.
Since the ancient times, Ukraine has been known as a "bread basket" of Europe, and in this context Ukrainian agricultural education and science has its great history and plays an important role in the world system of agriculture.
The conference will be held at the National Assembly Hall Ukrainian House and National Agricultural University of Ukraine, one of the leading higher educational institutions in Ukraine with more than hundred years history.
